COVID-19: 'Postcode lottery' tier system unfair to pubs on wrong side of the road

The John Harvey Arms is at the centre of the community and the owners were looking forward to swinging open their doors at the end of lockdown. But the pub is just inside Tier 3 in Bristol and will have to remain closed - even though the next nearest pub, just a few hundred metres away in Tier 2, can start serving drinks. For landlady Sue Diaper it's a massive setback. The pub has just been decked out for Christmas and she is losing thousands of pounds. COVID crisis: The economic emergency and 5 days of Christmas

On Wednesday, Chancellor Rishi Sunak delivered his spending review - his economic plan for the year ahead.  The UK is having to face up to the scale of the financial cost caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Britain's economy is expected to shrink by 11.3% this year, while unemployment is predicted to rise to 7.5% by next summer - that's 2.6 million people. Tough choices have been made, including a pay freeze for non-NHS public sector workers earning more than £24,000 and a cut to foreign aid spending next year. But more are likely to follow. And what might relaxing rules for five days of Christmas mean for our road to recovery? On this edition of the Sky News Daily podcast with Dermot Murnaghan, we hear personal stories from people who … 阅读全文

Oxford COVID vaccine success - and then there were three

There is a team of scientists at the University of Oxford that is both over-joyed and shattered.  Trials of their vaccine with AstraZeneca in the fight against coronavirus indicate it is up to 90% effective. There is also some suggestion that the vaccine could even help to prevent the spread of COVID-19. On the Sky News Daily podcast with Dermot Murnaghan we hear from Professor Sarah Gilbert, who is the woman who led the Oxford team, while our science correspondent Thomas Moore examines the detail as we compare the Oxford vaccine with the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna ones. Test and Trace bosses believe they need to "rebuild public trust" and are planning a pre-Christmas push to rescue the troubled service, according to leaked slides seen by Sky News. The documents, shown during a video call hosted by some of Test and Trace's most senior executives, reveal the deep concern within the English contact-tracing programme about its image and performance. COVID-19: Has the pandemic changed parliament forever?

Prime Minister's Questions has been a political ritual in British politics for nearly 60 years, with MPs and journalists flooding into the House of Commons, for a dramatic 30-minute showdown of political arguments. But coronavirus means the tradition has had to change.  With just a handful of MPs allowed inside the Commons, politicians have swapped dispatch box dust-ups for digital debates. Has social distancing changed parliament permanently? And could this be the beginning of a digital democracy? In this episode of the Sky News Daily podcast hosted by Sophy Ridge, MP Alyn Smith talks through what sitting in parliament via Zoom is like and historian Dr Matt Cole describes how the Commons and PMQs has changed over the past 100 years. Coronavirus: Britons should be paid to take COVID-19 vaccine, says Oxford professor

People should be paid to have a COVID-19 jab so the country reaches herd immunity as quickly as possible, a leading ethicist has suggested. Professor Julian Savulescu from the University of Oxford said incentives would help to overcome rising vaccine hesitancy due to perceived safety concerns. People could either be given a financial inducement to have the jab or they could be paid in kind, perhaps foregoing the need to wear a facemask in public, he writes in the Journal of Medical Ethics. "The advantage of payment for risk is that people are choosing voluntarily to take it on," he says. Coronavirus: Govt will 'strive to improve' data after watchdog criticises Downing Street presentation

A cabinet minister has told Sky News the government will "strive to improve" its data operation after the official statistics watchdog issued a rare rebuke, warning the public could be confused by the depiction of COVID information. Business minister Nadhim Zahawi told Kay Burley that the administration will "listen very carefully to the official statistics watchdog and make sure we respond accordingly". The UK Statistics Authority (UKSA) said there was a danger that confidence in official figures could be undermined if they were not "supported by transparent information being provided in a timely manner".
